Big King Reserve

|

There were once Three Kings standing tall and proud but now Big King is the only left.

Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta (a.k.a Big King) is a volcano in the Three Kings suburb. As the name suggests, Three Kings used to have three prominent peaks but all have since been quarried away leaving behind the Big King.

Big King Reserve is a large off-leash area at the end of dominion road that caters for a large variety of dog play with both flat and steep terrain. There are two large flat areas, one at the base of the hill and one a little further into the walk where dogs (and their parents) tend to congregate and have a good run around. There’s also a circular track around the hill which is very accessible having only one flight of stairs. You can also take your dog on a detour up to the top of the hill and take in some spectacular views over the city.

This park is super popular with dog owners - you’ll find people walking here at most times of the day but it’s especially popular with the after work crowd. Around 5:30-6:00pm is a great time to go and socialise with other fur-parents taking their dog for a walk after work. A popular place to stop and chat is up on the second flat area at the base of the hill. Don’t be surprised if you run into a group as big as 15 people and their dogs - we’ve found everyone to be super friendly and relaxed, it’s a great atmosphere for you and your furry friend.

There are poop bags and bins available at the beginning of the walk (you’ll also often see items such as keys here as it serves as a temporary lost and found).

Location: Duke Street (off the end of Dominion Road)

Snowy’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best bit is meeting all the other dogs and having a huge run around!! The view doesn’t hurt either. Great for a morning explore or after work runabout to burn off some excess energy.

✔️ Off-leash
✔️ Poop bags + bins
✔️ Varied terrain
✔️ Very popular with other owners
